The Ottawa Library Parcel required a retaining wall solution that could safely support the City’s adjacent LRT corridor while complementing one of Ottawa’s most high-profile developments. Originally specified with a competing retaining wall system, the design required massive 12.9-tonne precast concrete base blocks and specialized hardware to achieve the necessary wall height—adding significant cost and complexity to the project. With the introduction of MCON’s new Stone Strong D150 blocks, our team proposed an alternative solution that eliminated the need for these additional base components, simplifying installation while delivering substantial cost savings.

Standing 7.3 metres tall, the completed wall was one of the first projects to incorporate the D150 blocks and also featured 119 custom dual blocks with a chiseled granite face and flat back—a first for MCON. These custom units allowed the curb of the multi-use pathway to sit flush against the wall, creating a clean, seamless finish without compromising structural performance. By combining innovative product design with custom manufacturing capabilities, MCON delivered a durable, aesthetically pleasing retaining wall that met the project’s technical requirements while reducing installation time, material costs, and overall project complexity.
