ABOUT MCON

1956

Central Precast Products Ltd. was founded by Luigi Mion and Dino Venier. They started by making precast steps in an unheated garage on Preston Street for Ottawa’s top housing developers at the time, Campeau and Minto.

1963

The company relocated to Bongard Ave., where it began producing maintenance holes and underground structures. Luigi and Dino acquired the City of Ottawa catchbasin and 600 mm maintenance hole forms from Harry Hayley. All products were made using wetcast methods.

1970

Drycast equipment was installed to produce larger maintenance holes and catchbasins, including sizes of 1050 mm, 1200 mm, and 600 mm x 600 mm, adhering to Ontario’s standards.

1988

To meet growing demand, Luigi Mion, along with his brother Gustavo Mion and two sons John and Rudy, decided to expand into precast concrete pipe production, leading to the creation of MCON Products. Land clearing began for the future Carp Road property.

1989

Production started at the new MCON Products’ Carp Road facility with a single Hawkeye Pipe Plus machine, producing maintenance holes, catchbasins, and concrete pipes up to 900 mm in diameter.

1992

The Phase 4 plant expansion was completed, featuring the installation of a Hawkeye VUP Model 120 machine for producing OPSD box culverts and larger diameter concrete pipes (1800 mm to 3000 mm).

2004

MCON Pipe and Products opened a second plant location in Ayr, Ontario. This new facility provided our same high-quality maintenance and pipe products to Western Ontario. We continued to expand both our production facilities and product lines to meet the growing demands of the Ottawa market.

2012

MCON became a licensed producer of the Stone Strong retaining wall system to supply the Ontario market.

2014

The original pipe machine was upgraded to the Hawkeye Pipe Plus Plus, introducing automation and efficiencies. New drycast maintenance hole forms were also added.State-of-the-art Kuka Milling Robot, hot wire cutters, and SmartCast wetcast monobase forms were introduced into production.

2016

The Marcantonini (MCT) batch plant underwent a retrofit, including the demolition of existing systems and the upgrade of climate-controlled aggregate and cement storage, enhancing batching speed.

2017

Phase 9 plant expansion was completed, featuring the relocation of the Hawkeye VUP machine, upgrades to control systems to increase automation, increased hopper sizes, and a dedicated space for cage production.

2018

John Mion left M CON Pipe and Products to concentrate on the three facilities in Ottawa: Central Precast, MCON Products, and Utility Structures Inc. With John leading the Precast Group on his own, and following in his father's visionary footsteps, he assembled an advisory board and began planning for the next generation of industry leaders and the anticipated growth of The Precast Group of Companies.

2022

The wetcast department moved from Phase 2 to the new Phase 4 expansion. The new area, equipped with two 20,000 kg cranes, supports SmartCast and Stone Strong production.

2023

The original Pipe Plus 2 production bay in Phase 1 expansion was completed. SmartCast and Stone Strong production moved back to Phase 1, while the recently completed Phase 2 expansion received two 30,000 kg cranes to enhance custom wetcast production.

2024

The company celebrates its 35th anniversary by simplifying its name to MCON and introducing a new, modernized logo and brand refresh.

OUR HISTORY

MCON. was established in 1989 but our roots date back to 1956, when Central Precast Inc. began manufacturing precast concrete products for the general construction industry. The product line and manufacturing facility grew to include landscape, utility products, maintenance holes, catch basins, concrete poles, steps, barriers, and architectural panels. As the product line expanded, new companies were formed to focus on their specific industries, and The Precast Group was created. Luigi Mion, with the help of his two sons and brother, Gustavo Mion, expanded Central Precast’s current production by building MCON which is now Eastern Ontario’s largest family owned and operated precast concrete manufacturer.

COMMITMENT TO PEOPLE & INNOVATION

In response to our customers’ needs, we now produce a wide range of high-quality products, including but not limited to circular and elliptical reinforced concrete pipe, circular and box maintenance holes, catch basins, box culverts, oil grit separators, storm water retention systems and gravity retaining wall systems.
