When Amazon set out to build its new DYT6 parking lot in Ottawa, they needed a retaining wall solution that could handle both the height and be installed in a timely manner. Originally specified with Permacon Grande blocks, the wall would have required extensive geogrid reinforcement and significant labor to install thousands of small blocks — a time-consuming and costly approach. Instead, the contractor, Tomlinson, recognized the advantages of using MCON’s Stone Strong retaining wall system and insisted on making the switch.
With only 432 Stone Strong blocks, the team completed a 542.9 m² wall that reached up to 5 meters high at its tallest point — all in just one month. The larger block size meant fewer pieces to handle, no need for excessive geogrid, and significant savings on both time and installation costs. On top of that, Stone Strong’s vertical design maximized usable space, giving Amazon additional parking spots that would have otherwise been lost if the lot had to be graded out. This goes to show how the right approach and product choice can simplify complex builds, reduce costs, and ultimately deliver more value.
